Portal Cake! (yes, the video game)

16 Dec

As it turns out, the cake is not a lie, and the cake is delicious.

For those who’re out of the loop, Portal is a science fiction computer game from Valve Corporation in which the player (there’s only one) is promised cake upon solving puzzles. Along the way, the character encounters messages graffitied on the walls like, “The cake is a lie.” Finally at the end of the game, just before the credits, you reach the cake. This cake:

Alas, a robotic hand extinguishes the candle and leaves you in darkness before you can eat it!

Well, my fiancé and I both love the game, and for his birthday this month I couldn’t help but make the cake.

Creamy-frosted Simple Cake

10 Dec

I’ll be out of town for my housemate’s college graduation this weekend, so I’m leaving this cake for her and her visitors :) It’s a simple two-layer French vanilla cake with chocolate filling, frosted with a creamy chocolate frosting – the most delicious chocolate frosting.

I swirled the frosting with a teaspoon – I love the rich look of swirls. I’d show you a picture of the inside, but I’m going to miss the cutting! Have a great weekend :)

Yum.

Peanut Butter-Fudge Brownies

The other night I got a random yearning to bake something rich and chocolatey, and, most importantly, I wanted to eat it. Unfortunately my cupboards were about as desolate as my sweet tooth. I had the basics, but not a lot of time. So there I went: the recipe from the side of a cake mix box.

Peanut Butter Balls

27 Jun

Sorry for all the peanut butter lately! If you missed it, I’m catching up on sweets I made for a peanut butter-chocolate bridal shower.

I know there are tons of recipes floating around for peanut butter balls – and everyone has his favorite – but this one is worth writing out. It’s sort of a conglomerate of multiple recipes.

Combine:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup rice krispies
  • 1 cup cocoa pebbles
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
Melt in [sauce pan]:
  • 2 cups peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup butter
Pour peanut butter/butter over [dry] mixture and stir together.
Shape into balls, refrigerate till firm, and dip in chocolate.
I covered half in milk chocolate and half in semi-sweet. (The swirls on top of the semi-sweet balls are actually piped with Nestle’s peanut butter chips.)

Mini Monogram Cupcakes

25 Jun

These cute little bites were personalized for a bride-to-be at her bridal shower. The cupcakes are mini vanilla-chocolate – then chocolate frosting, a sugar cookie, and a chocolate melting wafer with the letter. Continue reading
